What is a Mental Health First Aid Course?
This 2-day NHS-accredited course aims to:
• Preserve life
• Provide help to prevent the mental health problem or crisis developing into a more serious state
• Promote the recovery of good mental health.
• Provide comfort to a person experiencing distress.
• Promote understanding of mental health issues.
It is structured around developing skills in how to:
• Approach, assess and assist with any crisis
• Listen and communicate non-judgmentally
• Give support, information and encouragement to the person seeking help.
Delegates have an opportunity to apply these principles to different mental ill-health scenarios – such as depression, anxiety, self-harm and psychosis. The course also looks briefly at the impact of alcohol and drugs on mental health.
The course is highly interactive — with discussions, case studies and individual / group activities. All delegates are provided with a full training manual which can be used as a useful reference document after the course. No prior knowledge of the topic areas is required.
